Georgia fell just short of earning its first ever win at the European Championship when it earned a draw against Czechia in its last contest. The Australian match-fixing saga had another chapter added it to at as the captain of A-League soccer club Macarthur, Ulises Davila, reached a mutual agreement with the club to terminate his contract, according to an Associated Press story.
In May, Davila was accused of getting two younger players on the club, Kearyn Baccus and Clayton Lewis, to work with him on a scheme organized by a South American gambling connect to get yellow cards in matches.
Baccus has also been released by the club, but Lewis, who is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday, is still with the team.
Police say the betting scheme led to hundreds of thousands of dollars being paid out to gamblers. Documents presented at Sydney’s Downing Centre Local Court allege Davila, in his role as captain, influenced other Macarthur players to participate in the scheme.
Investigators says yellow cards, which are universally issued as cautions by referees for foul play, were manipulated during A-League games played on Nov. 24 and Dec. 9. Macarthur played out a 1-1 draw with Melbourne Victory in the first of those matches before beating Sydney FC 2-0 in the second.
All three charged players were given yellow cards in the Dec. 9 game. Police also allege unsuccessful attempts were made to do the same thing during matches on April 20 and May 4 of this year.
The Georgia vs Portugal live stream is part of a Group F double bill that brings the opening phase of Euro 2024 to a close. Georgia must win to stand any chance of making the last 16 in their maiden tournament, while Portugal go for their third win.
Georgia have been huge fun in Germany and many a neutral will hope the Crusaders can pick up the win they need to reach the knockouts. Georges Mikautadze has scored in both games, his opener last time out in the 1-1 draw with the Czech Republic should have been added to by Saba Lobzhanidze in the game's dying embers but the substitute blazed over when well placed. Willy Sagnol's side attack and want this.
Portugal have lost just two of their 17 games under Roberto Martinez and their 3-0 defeat of Turkey was proof their limp opening display against the Czechs was just an isolated aberration. Cristiano Ronaldo is yet to score this tournament, but will become the European Championship's oldest to bag – beating Luka Modric's newly established record – if he can find the net.
Georgia will again rely on superb Valencia Giorgi Mamardashvili, who despite being the most shot-at goalkeeper at the tournament has made more saves than any other gloveman (16) and conceded three goals fewer than his xG indicates he should have, based on the chances faced. Portugal boss Martinez may rest a few of his charges, but Rafael Leao is suspended.
Already qualified for the Euro 2024 knockouts, Portugal will face Georgia in their final game in the group stage at Veltins-Arena on Wednesday.
Roberto Martinez's side have guaranteed the top spot in Group F after wins over Czech Republic and Turkey.
Meanwhile, the Crusaders gave themselves some hope as they registered a 1-1 draw with Czechia but will need to pick three points against the Portuguese in order to possibly stand a chance of qualification as one of the four best third-placed teams.
Georgia team news
Georgia head coach Willy Sagnol is expected to go ahead with an unchanged line-up, with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia in the focus of things.
Captain Guram Kashia is a booking away from a ban in case the Crusaders manage to book a round of 16 spot.
AC Milan forward Rafael Leao will face a one-match ban on account of accumulation of two yellow cards, so it will remain for either Pedro Neto or Joao Felix to step in as the replacement on the left side.
Joao Palhinha and Francisco Conceicao are at risk of suspension should they pick another booking on Wednesday, while Martinez would think of Goncalo Ramos to replace Cristiano Ronaldo at some point in the game.
Portugal possible XI: Costa; Semedo, A. Silva, Dias, Cancelo; Neves, Palhinha, B. Silva, Fernandes, Felix; Ronaldo
Portugal have already won Group F at Euro 2024 and will tonight make changes when they meet minnows Georgia in Gelsenkirchen. Roberto Martinez can afford to rest players safe in the knowledge his team are in the last 16 but has confirmed Cristiano Ronaldo will retain his spot up front as he searches for his first goal of the tournament.
The fact there will be changes will no doubt please Georgia boss Willy Sagnol, who could yet lead his team into the knockout stages for the first time. Still, they will have to overcome the Portuguese tonight in order to so but confidence should be high after taking their first ever point at a European Championship against Czechia last time out.
Portugal have looked like one of the strongest teams in the tournament so far but it will be fascinating to see how they approach their final group game.
With nothing to play for it is hard to believe that Roberto Martinez will not significantly rotate his side, perhaps withdrawing Joao Palhinha from the XI given that he is one booking away from missing the round of 16. Rafael Leao will already be serving a one-game ban for the two yellow cards he has picked up at Euro 2024.
While the stakes are low for Martinez they could not be higher for Willy Sagnol, who opted to do without the more attack-minded Giorgi Chakvetadze in the draw with Czechia. Given that Georgia need a win the Watford midfielder could well find himself back in the XI.
Roberto Martínez's team left it late to beat Czech Republic in their opener, but were far too good for Turkey, beating them 3-0 to clinch top spot and book their place in the round of 16.
If Portugal are expecting an easy game to finish off Group F, they should think again, because Georgia have proven their worth at this tournament already and have everything to play for.
A victory in Gelsenkirchen should be enough for Willy Sagnol's side to reach the round of 16 in what is their first ever Euros. That would be a remarkable feat for the lowest-ranked side in the competition.
While A Seleção has been impressive so far in this tournament, we have not yet had a Cristiano Ronaldo moment. This game may see him finally make his mark on Euro 2024. That said, given they are guaranteed a place in the last 16, boss Roberto Martinez may consider giving the 39-year-old and 41-year-old Pepe a rest.
The Crusaders have been enjoyable to watch this tournament, giving it everything. However, a big miss by Saba Lobjanidze with the final kick to win their match against Czechia has put their progress in doubt. They need three points to qualify, with a draw unlikely to leave them as one of the four best third-placed teams.
It is the closing of Group F, and one of the four teams is already confirmed for the next round. Cristiano Ronaldo‘s Portugal, after securing victories against the Czech Republic and Turkey, now has 6 points and only needs a draw to secure first place.
To top it off, they now face what is considered the weakest team in the group, Georgia, despite their very good performance. The team, led by star Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, knows they are in search of a miracle, as they need a win against Portugal to qualify for the next round.
